Range

A period when price moves sideways between a ceiling and a floor instead of trending, also called consolidation.

In a range, rallies keep stalling near the same upper area and declines keep stopping near the same lower area. The swing highs and swing lows no longer line up as a clear uptrend or downtrend.

Chartora reads a range when the two latest swing highs and swing lows give a mixed result, such as a higher high with a lower low. Its chart desk also shows where the latest close sits between the lowest and highest closes of the last 90 sessions, on a scale from 0 (at the low) to 100 (at the high).

Ranges often end with a breakout above or below the boundaries, though many first attempts fail and return inside.
