Nonfarm payrolls
The monthly change in the number of paid US workers outside farming, published in the Bureau of Labor Statistics jobs report.
Nonfarm payrolls is the headline figure of the Employment Situation report from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, usually released on the first Friday of the month at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time. It comes from a survey of employers and leaves out farm workers, private household employees and the self-employed.
The same report includes the unemployment rate, which comes from a separate survey of households, and average hourly earnings.
The figures for the two previous months are revised in each new report, sometimes by large amounts. Markets react to the gap between the reported number and the consensus forecast, and to those revisions.
