Volume

The number of shares, contracts or coins traded during a period, usually shown as bars beneath the price chart.

Volume measures how much trading took place in each period. On most charts it appears as a bar under each candle, so a move in price can be compared with the activity behind it.

Traders often compare a period’s volume with its recent average. A breakout or a sharp reversal on unusually high volume is generally read as involving more participants than one on light volume.

Crypto trades on many exchanges at once, so a chart shows only the volume of the exchange or group of exchanges its data comes from. Stock volume can also differ between data providers depending on which venues they include.
